Down in a creepy, underwater world awaits an evil beast that wants to rip your heart out. Stuck in this place, known only as Rapture, the player has nowhere to run. In time you will learn to use the power of telekinesis to combat the ongoing threat. But that day won't come easy. First you'll have to walk alone into the darkness.
Bioshock's E3 demo was split into two halves, the first of which focused on the game's intro. You start out stranded at sea -- how, I'm not too sure. It's night, there's been an explosion, and the water and lighting effects are amazing. You can swim around for a bit to take into the sights and should soon discover an elevator that takes you to the underwater world. As you move deep into the ocean, an enormous underwater world comes into view. It truly looks like a city surrounded by water. There are buildings, flashy lights, submarines, etc. It's all so different from what you normally get out of an FPS.
When the elevator makes its first (and last?) stop, you'll get your first glimpse of the city's inhabitants. The scene is right out of a survival/horror game: a vicious monster attacks a man, splattering blood all over the floor, and all you can do is watch from behind protective glass. Then the monster sees you and begins to attack the glass, causing reality to sink in: this is a survival/horror game. It may not be classified as one in the way that Resident Evil or Silent Hill is, but when the only thing that stands between you and a monster is an elevator door, you aren't dealing with an ordinary action game.
Before I move onto the second half, it must be said that the music in this game, especially during the opening, is absolutely breathtaking. It has that same unquestionably eerie, this-isn't-right feel that was present in the movie The Village. It swarms around you like a curse, a curse you want to give into. I was instantly hooked by the sound and cannot wait to hear more.
The next portion of Bioshock demonstrated the game's stunning telekinesis mechanics. Any object you see in the game may be lifted and thrown at your opponent. Tanks of flammable gas are particularly rewarding, but if there isn't one in sight, a box, barrel, or whatever else is available will have to do -- if object-throwing is what you're looking to accomplish. Players can also use these powers in other cool ways, and one of the best allows you to catch a grenade just before it hits. The next step is pretty logical: throw it back at the enemy!
Bioshock is awesome, looked graphically amazing (this game is more than a high-def beauty -- its engine packs some real horsepower), and appeared to be a game of few roadblocks. Grenade retrieval looked easy. Even if it's not, the demo was not merely a video -- it was being played by a developer. If it was easy for her, we can be pretty sure that with enough practice, it'll be easy and seamless for us as well.
