E3 2007 Preview

One of Marvel’s most underrated superheroes has to be Iron Man. While the “billionaire playboy” edge has been done over and over again in comics, Iron Man approaches things pretty differently, by presenting a flawed hero in Tony Stark. An alcoholic who invented his trademark suit in order to keep himself alive after a serious accident, Stark is a damaged character with a storied past and an ideal candidate for saving the world. Therefore, it makes sense that Iron Man is getting turned into a film. Directed by Jon Favreau and featuring a star-studded cast featuring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges, Iron Man will certainly have the pedigree for a great superhero film next year. The game is certainly not looking to disappoint either.

Published and developed by SEGA, the game tie-in for Iron Man will feature a ton of assets from the upcoming film and will present you as a one man army of sorts, taking on missiles takes and flying through the air. While story elements were quite slim considering the secrecy surrounding the film’s plot, we were able to see some brief snippets of the game in action, and the outlook is pretty good so far.

The flight elements in Iron Man are pretty well done, something that is extremely important to the character’s mythology. You can hover up and down or soar through the sky at high-speed. When you’re screaming through the sky, the game will enter a side-shoulder view that looks really cool with the land zooming past.

Additionally, you’ll be able to use Iron Man’s special energy weapons, like his chest blast or the power blasts from his hands. You’ll even be able to perform counter moves, like catching a missile in mid-air and tossing it back at the missile silo that fired it.

Details on Iron Man are still pretty slim, but the brief bit that SEGA showed off should be cause for excitement for fans of the superhero. Look for it to release next year alongside the film.
